What is Coaching?

by Ircel Harrison

“Coaching is a growth-oriented, strategic relationship. Coaching links two peers, equals who are in distinct roles, to collaborate as thought partners and to find the way forward for the person being coached.” (Dale, Growing Agile Leaders, p. 60)

Bob Dale was a church consultant, colleague, and friend who taught me the value of coming alongside another person in a way that strengthened not only their ministry, but mine as well. That’s what coaching is all about—a partnership based on collaboration and mutual respect.
